South-Genderlist

The newest e-Conversation list between and among Southern Women on WCAR Issues!!

To draw attention to the themes and issues of women of the South and ensure that the South women's perspective is palpable to all discussions of the WCAR, the "south-gender mailing list" at <south-genderlist-en@isiswomen.org> has been set up by Isis International-Manila on behalf of the South-South Initiative (SSI). The SSI, composed of representatives from women's groups from Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean started as a formation when some Southern women gathered at the 45th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) from March 6-16, 2001 at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The group identified as need the space for Southern women to discuss from their perspective issues such as 1) the legacy of colonialism, indentured labour and slavery, as well as the plight of indigenous peoples including hunters and gatherers; 2) migrants and trafficked persons; and 3) internally displaced persons and refugees. In order to examine the intersectionality of gender, race and class, SSI has agreed to zero in on the question of WOMEN'S DILEMMAS IN BALANCING UNIVERSALITY and SPECIFICITY of WOMEN'S HUMAN RIGHTS. From the discussion, SSI hopes to prepare a position paper that will serve as input into the WCAR deliberations -- both at the government and NGO levels, reflective of perspective of women from the South.

In order to create a space for a dialogue between Southern women, the SSI has decided to set some criteria for enlisting to this discussion list. Firstly, the list is exclusively for women, and secondly, for women of the South whose vantage point is the experiences of the geographical South.

Isis International-Manila hosts the South-Genderlist for the South-South Initiative. To subscribe to the list, send an email to Susanna George at susanna@isiswomen.org.
